Andover’s 2024 Isham Fellow in Poetry, Aimee Nezhukumatathil is the author of four collections of poetry, most recently Oceanic; a chapbook of poetry co-written with Ross Gay; and the illustrated nature essay collection World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments—a New York Times bestseller and Barnes and Noble’s 2020 Book of the Year. Her honors include poetry fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, a Mississippi Arts Council grant, and the Gold Medal award in Poetry from the Independent Publishers Book Awards.

Nezhukumatathil, a professor of English and creative writing in the University of Mississippi’s MFA program, is also poetry editor for Sierra Magazine, the storytelling arm of the Sierra Club. Her book of food essays, Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees, was just published in April.

Join Marcia McCabe ’73 for this longstanding non sibi project with Citymeals on Wheels. Citymeals on Wheels provides a continuous lifeline of nourishing meals for homebound elderly. In previous years, Andover volunteers have helped to deliver meals. This year, the organization is asking for Andover volunteers to help with packaging meals.

Volunteers should plan to meet by 9 a.m. at the Encore Community Services located in the basement of St. Malachy's Church. As a thank you for your time and non sibi spirit, Marcia will host a brunch for all volunteers after the project at a restaurant (TBD) nearby.

Join us for this in-person non sibi project with Center for Wildlife - a private, non-profit, wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education organization.

Roll up your sleeves and help maintain animal enclosures and sanctuary grounds. This maintenance supports the wildlife center’s inhabitants so that they continue to live healthy lives in comfortable, top-notch environments. The day will start with refreshments, introduction to Center for Wildlife and a review of the following adult and family friendly projects. Volunteers will be assigned to a project below and should plan to be outside and dress for the weather.

Home Makeover for Wild Animal Enclosures: Adult volunteers only. Tasks include painting, cleaning, changing out sand and wood chips, and bringing in moss and stones for select non-releasable hawks, owls, falcons, and porcupine enclosures. There will be a brief wrap up presentation following the project, and access to live streams and videos of ambassadors using their new enclosures!

Food and Medicine Gardening: Family friendly! Tasks include pulling weeds and planting new food (lettuce and kale) and medicine (echinacea and citronella) in garden beds. There will be a brief wrap up presentation after the project and free play in the nature center.
